The short version

Who is responsible

Last Mile is made by Mike Eckhardt, an independent developer in the Netherlands, who is responsible for your data under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). In this policy, "we" and "us" mean the developer. Questions about your data go to mikeyeckhardt@gmail.com.

What the app collects, and why

Your account

An account is optional. If you make one: your email address, your name if Apple or Google gives it to us, how you sign in, and an account ID. We use these to sign you in and keep your runs in sync. This is needed to provide the account (GDPR article 6(1)(b)). Without an account, nothing below leaves your phone except crash reports, and whatever you choose to send to Apple Health or Strava.

Your runs

For each run: the date and time, duration, distance, GPS route with the height at each point and the climb, pace and splits, heart rate if you run with a monitor, and which story episode or workout it was. Your location is only recorded while you're recording a run, including while the screen is locked. Runs are stored on your phone and, if you have an account, in your account, so they appear on your other devices. This is needed to provide the app (article 6(1)(b)).

Your running profile

Your answers to the questions when you first open the app: your experience, whether you can run for 20 minutes, a recent race time or the pace of an easy run if you give one, how often and how far you run, your goal, and the days you want to run. Also your weekly goal. We use these to decide where your story starts, your first weekly goal, your paces and your reminders (article 6(1)(b)).

Your shoes (optional)

If you add shoes: the name you give each pair, how far they had run when you added them, when to replace them, and which runs were in them. We use these to show how far each pair has run. They're stored on your phone and, if you have an account, in your account (article 6(1)(b)).

Apple Health

Only if you allow it: the app saves your runs to Apple Health as running workouts with their route and heart rate, and on iOS 26 it reads your heart rate from compatible headphones during a run. Heart rate recorded during a run is kept with that run, so if you have an account it's also stored there. Health data is used only to show you your runs. It is never used for advertising or marketing and never given to anyone else for their own use. You can change these permissions in the Health app at any time (article 9(2)(a), your explicit consent).

Runs from your watch (optional)

If you turn on Settings → Apple Health → Add runs from Apple Health, the app reads running workouts that other apps and watches saved to Apple Health (such as an Apple Watch or Garmin): their time, distance, route and heart rate. They're kept as runs like the ones you record in Last Mile, so if you have an account they're stored there too. The same rules as for other Health data apply: never used for advertising, never given to anyone else. Turn it off at any time (article 9(2)(a), your explicit consent).

Motion & Fitness

If you allow it: on a run outdoors, the app reads your phone's barometer to measure how the height changes along the route, and on a treadmill run, your phone's step counter to measure the distance. Only the heights and the distance are kept, with the run, so if you have an account they're stored there too, and they go to Apple Health and Strava with the run if you use them. Without Motion & Fitness, the heights come from GPS (article 6(1)(b)).

Crash reports

If the app crashes, a crash report is sent through Firebase Crashlytics. It contains your phone model, iOS version, app version, where in the app's code the crash happened, a few lines about what the app was doing (such as "Run started: Episode 2.1"), an ID for this installation of the app, and your account ID, so reports from one person can be grouped. It never contains your runs, routes, name or email address. To work out how often the app crashes, Firebase also notes when the app is opened, with the app and iOS version and the installation ID, but not your account ID. We use this to find and fix bugs (article 6(1)(f), legitimate interest). You can turn it off in Settings → Help and about.

Subscriptions

Subscriptions are sold and handled by Apple under Apple's terms. We never see your payment details. The app only asks the App Store whether your Apple ID has an active subscription.

Feedback

If you send feedback, we receive your email address and whatever you write, plus the details the app adds to the email: the app version, iOS version, phone model and your next episode. We use these only to answer you and fix problems.

Strava (optional)

If you connect Strava, the key that lets Last Mile post to your Strava account is stored in your phone's Keychain, not on our servers. Runs you upload, or every new run if you turn on automatic uploads, are sent to Strava with their route and heart rate. Once there, Strava's privacy policy applies. You can disconnect in Settings at any time.

On your phone only

What the website collects

The waitlist

If you join the waitlist on this website, we store your email address, where on the site you signed up (such as the top of the page, or a link from one of our posts) and when. We use it only to send you one email when Last Mile is in the App Store, as the form says. You give your consent by signing up (article 6(1)(a)); to be taken off the list, email mikeyeckhardt@gmail.com. The list is kept in Cloud Firestore, where nobody but us can read it.

Visiting the website

The website has no cookies, no analytics and no trackers, and it doesn't load fonts or scripts from other companies. Firebase Hosting, which serves it, processes your IP address to deliver the pages and protect them against abuse.

Who processes your data for us

Your account, runs and profile, and the waitlist, are stored with Google Firebase (Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore), crash reports are processed by Firebase Crashlytics, and the website is served by Firebase Hosting. If you sign in with Google or Apple, that company confirms who you are. Google may process data outside the European Economic Area, including in the United States. Such transfers are covered by the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.

We don't share your data with anyone else, unless the law requires it.

How long we keep it

Deleting your data

In the app, go to Settings → Account → Delete account. This deletes your account, all your runs and your profile from the server straight away, and clears them from your phone. You can also ask us by email. Without an account, deleting the app deletes everything.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you can ask to see the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, limit its use, or object to its use. You can also get a copy to take elsewhere: Settings → Backup → Back up runs saves all your runs to a file. Where we rely on your consent, such as for Apple Health or location, you can withdraw it at any time in the iOS Settings or Health app. Email mikeyeckhardt@gmail.com to use any of these rights.

If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, or the authority where you live.

Security

Data is encrypted on its way to and from the server and while it's stored there. Each account can only read and write its own data.

Children

Last Mile isn't meant for children under 16.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top. Important changes will be announced in the app.
